change...

have reached yet another new year's eve. 2010 was a moyen, or average year; as the french would say. i am neither glad nor sorry to see it go. it's just that time.

change is inevitable... except from a vending machine. robert c. gallagher

windows...

had an odd encounter at the grocery store on christmas eve. was in the produce section, examining parsley when a woman caught my eye. talking and walking towards me, she asked, "did dad get the pears?" i laughed and said "yes". she, stopped, really looked at me, sputtered and explained that she mistake me for her daughter. "i mean, she's wearing a black hat too!"

my only response was, "this is conclusive proof that we see what we want to see."
the black hat wearing daughter suddenly materialized and mom, said, a little defensively, "well the hats are similar."

the woman and i were easily age peers and i could have a daughter the same age as hers. the most bizarre part about the entire exchange... i am clearly a woman of color and the woman and her daughter were white females.

mom was obviously talking to the hat and "saw" nothing else. very twilight zone!!

this blake poem, though a little out of context for the situation nevertheless seems appropriate.

this life's dim windows of the soul
Distorts the heavens from pole to pole
And leads you to believe a lie
When you see with, not through, the eye.
william blake

reason...

(internet image from st john the baptist's church, ashfield, australia)
christians are constantly reminding the rest of us that 'jesus is the reason for the season'. on this day, which was set aside to commemorate the birth of jesus of nazareth, i say remember the humble man, the teacher, prophet and healer who spoke of love, compassion, forgiveness and peace.
merry christmas

solstice...

(internet photo)
the word 'solstice' comes from the latin sol (sun) and staum (stand still). on the first two or three days of summer and winter the sun seems to linger for several minutes in its passage across the sky, before it begins to double back.

this winter solstice will coincide with a full lunar eclipse; this hasn't happened in 372 years. looking forward to catching it right about now!!

hope...

ah... the holiday season is in full swing, though it seems to have been swinging since halloween.... am writing the last few pages of my 2010 daily journal, the 2011 journal is waiting its turn. have already said "happy new year" to a couple of people i won't see until 2011 and have received my first holiday gift.

consider myself an optimistic realist so am once again polishing the star of hope in expectation of a better year.

the other day saw a bloomingdale's holiday ad, a giant HOPE on the side of a phone booth. i snorted because the word 'hope' (in my mind) has become intrinsically linked to the 2008 obama presidential campaign. though i want to believe that i'm savvy, i, too, bought into the hope and change slogan. the unfolding political and current events have almost killed the 'change' and definitely tarnished the 'hope'.

BUT i'm clinging to the possibility of a better 2011 (for all of us) and drumming up the desire and drive to work for it.

time travel...

just finished reading, much to my dismay, "all clear", the latest connie willis book. found that i have been using every available moment to devour the story. could hear my aunt saying, "sitting with your head buried in a book".

connie willis' books are meticulously researched works of historical fiction written around the world war II london blitz with a little time travel thrown in. these books are right up my alley since for as long as i can remember i have contemplated WWII and time travel.

have long anguished over the impact a time traveler or historian (as willis called her time travelers) could/would or would not have on historical events. after reading "all clear" am sure that one cannot merely be an observer of life, even when visiting another time dimension, we are FORCED to be participants in some form or fashion.

"all clear" caused me to once again ponder and marvel at the chain or domino effect of events or occurrences.

if i could go back in time, i would cross paths with my mother as she walked with the children selves of my sister and me in san francisco's chinatown early one weekday morning. i would catch a performance of la callas (maria) at milan's la scala, would visit the court of queen elizabeth I and would be one of kandinsky and klee's students at the bauhaus.

ah well... guess, i have to be right here, right now... but i can dream.

change...

a friend of mine posted this the other day, "one person who decides to be happy can improve his or her home and community. a group of happy people can change their city, and that city a state, and that state the country, and that country the world. if each of us decide to find our personal joy, we can change the world and make it a happier place to live."

was thinking about what the above 'happy' entailed .. think it's a mixture of contentment, satisfaction and acceptance of life without rancor. working very hard to 'be the change that i want to see in the world'.
