recycling...

visited an outdoors museum... this place was the ultimate exercise in recycling. reviewing the space as a whole, the artist felt a little 'crazed'. however, the individuality and creativity of the separate pieces was refreshing and innovative with a touch of humor.

here are a few of the art pieces from 'the noah purifoy outdoor desert art museum of assemblage sculpture' in joshua tree. (think the name says it all.)

vivian maier...

recognition... the photographic work of vivian maier is finally being seen by a wider audience.

about a year and a half ago i stumbled across the photography of vivian maier. since then i've regularly viewed the blog dedicated to her work. i was so impressed by the blogger's serendipitous story of discovery of maier's work and the beauty of her photographs that i immediately added the site to orient view's list of friends and inspiration. an amazing story of discovery and the subsequent journey of the 'finder', john maloof, to make sure that an unknown photographer gets 'her due'. happy to see such an interest.

palm trees...

palm trees are fascinating; some remind me of shaggy, prehistoric beasts while others call to mind exotic places along the spice route or stories of the arabian nights. recently spent time in palm springs, california; the city lived up to its name with its majestic palm trees nearly always in view.

because of a news article i kept asking our hosts if the trees were real. in 2002, when working in LA, i read an article that los angeles authorities were placing plastic palms trees around the city. this strategic placement of plastic trees was being done because a certain species of palm was diseased and dying. i think i actually saw a couple of the genus palm plastic scattered around the city. regardless, the story stuck with me and i've been known to touch plants testing their authenticity; quite often they've not been living.

i used my trusty iphone to take lots of photographs.

1.11.11

1.11.11... we have the opportunity to see a date with only ones, three times this year. (twice in january and once in november) no wonder the metaphysical world is abuzz with notices that angels are coming and going in our realm. it's almost as if the numbers are glyphs on a rune that all the psychics are throwing and reading at the same time.

a song that i liked to sing as a five year old came rattling through my head, "this little light of mine i'm going to let it shine, let it shine, let it shine".

cycles...

the ending of an old year and the beginning of a new one has always given me pause. can't help but think of a dog chasing its tail or the wheel in a hamster cage.

naturally the beginning of a new cycle, at least i want to believe it's the beginning of a new cycle, brings forth introspection and reflection. the new year, for me there are three; the jewish high holidays, the conventional signal of year's end on december 31 and my birth day, provides a ritualized time for change.

i meditated 2010 out and 2011 in. later on 1.1.11 i awoke with the words, "let your light shine" swirling like a silver ribbon round and round in my head. obviously, others are thinking the same thing because i came across this concept several times on new year's day.

it's being here now that's important. there's no past and no future. time is a very misleading thing. all there is ever, is the now. we can gain experience from the past, but we can't relive it; and we can hope for the future, but we don't know if there is one. George Harrison
