mick hucknall...

(internet photo)
last night we went with friends to see mick hucknall at l'olympia. it was FANTASTIC. normally i find the volume of concerts to be slightly unbearable. for this concert, remembered to take my earplugs and the evening was so much more enjoyable.

the audience was truly multigenerational. was interesting to watch the french 'let loose'. they sang along in english to some of the songs, clapped to others and at the end danced in the aisles.

am very intrigued by reflections of all kinds, mirrors, windows, puddles... from time to time have wished i could slip through a mirror or puddle and see what was on the other side. would it be the opposite of where we live, like looking at something backwards or a totally alternate universe? obviously i'm not the only person with this desire because a great many books and films have been based on exactly that premise, stepping inside the reflection!

haven't had the time or perhaps inclination to sit down and collect my thoughts about countries raiding people's bank accounts to pay, as yahoo news put it, their gambling debts. right now the account dipping is confined to cyprus but i'm sure it's the tip of the iceberg. at some point soon, other cash strapped country will do the same.

today the u.s. supreme court will hear arguments regarding same-sex marriage. here's hoping they do their job in a fair and impartial manner; ruling for equal rights for all couples. regardless of the decision there's bound to be a lot of dissatisfied people.

change is in the air... old, out-dated prejudicial ways of treatment under the law must go!! may peace prevail on earth

am used to seeing hanging shoes in new york so wasn't really surprised to see the custom had made it to paris. these were seen hanging in a busy commercial district. some say it's a drug dealing signal, a sign of bullying or the announcement that someone has new shoes and these old ones are no longer needed. who knows??

i have always made it a point not to read reviews before seeing a film, perhaps i need to rethink that particular issue. yesterday went to see denzel washington's latest film, 'flight'. the film was never showing in many paris theatres and now i think i know why! it was a torturous two hour plus infomercial for alcoholics anonymous made seemingly by someone who had just discovered the wonders of recovery.

the film had all the trappings of a person still reveling in the zealot state of new sobriety and the rediscovery of christianity, specifically evangelical christianity. please don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with either of these things, alcoholics anonymous or evangelical christianity but if i had known, i certainly wouldn't have sat through this tedious, sanctimonious film.

the viewers was lectured about the evils of stimulants, through the character's consumption of unbelievably large amounts of alcohol and cocaine. we were pounded over the head with obvious music choices which showed how the scene would play out. i kept thinking, 'wow, they must have had a huge music budget'.

while i love sitting in a movie theatre and sometimes the longer the film, the better, length does not replace quality. hollywood seems to be stretching what are already thin plot lines to the breaking point. once again, should have waited for the video release; the price difference would have soothed some of the resentment of seeing such a weak script with unsympathetic, slightly underdeveloped characters and at least two endings. oh well, live and learn.

watching the news reports last night it seems more than ever, the entire world is in turmoil. if the various conflicts, domestic and international, were symbolized by fires, small smouldering bush varieties to huge, out of control, so-called three alarm blazes, i wonder what the earth would look like from space. would it be red, yellow, blue and white, with the flames trying to connect, link to others, creating blazing belts of destruction.

was thinking about peace and what that means. according to wikipedia, peace is a state of harmony characterized by the lack of violent, conflict behaviors and the freedom from fear of violence. commonly understood as the absence of hostility, peace also suggests the existence of healthy or newly healed interpersonal or international relationships.

based on the wikipedia definition the world will NEVER know peace. i suppose it is incumbent on each of us, individually, to try to attain some kind of inner peace and live it. that is easier said than done but what choice do we have?

imagine all the people living life in peace. you may say i'm a dreamer, but i'm not the only one. i hope someday you'll join us, and the world will be as one.  john lennon

allée de cygnes...

because it was sunny and 48° in paris on sunday we decided to be flaneur for the day. last week riding the above ground extension of the 6 line we noticed a park running along the seine and decided to find and visit it.  the narrow tree-lined promenade turned out to be allée des cygnes which ultimately led us to the ile aux cygnes where a replica of the statue of liberty stands.
