yesterday took a short day trip to parc de sceaux, a huge park a short distance from paris. we spent the afternoon walking and/or sitting, enjoying the wonderful spring weather and beautiful landscape.

inner peace...

sometimes i wonder about constantly intoning the words 'may peace prevail on earth'; question whether humans will ever create a world with a minimum of violence let alone a place of peace. perhaps this yearning for peace is merely clinging to a utopian dream. when i add the word 'and in me' to the phrase it no longer feels so futile and i feel better.

world peace must develop from inner peace. peace is not just mere absence of violence. peace is, i think the manifestation of human compassion. dalai lama xiv

boston...

we had dinner with friends last night and returned home around midnight to the news that there had been two explosions at the finish line of the boston marathon. this continuous demonstration of man's desire to mete out punishment based on their warped and perverted sense of justice is beyond comprehension. i realize this is a rhetorical question, but how long can all this destruction and senseless killing continue; until we, as a species are totally extinct?

i don't yet know any details but am sure the u.s. will, nationally, gash their teeth, pour over the news reports, denounce and call for action ... then for most, after a few days or weeks, return to their daily lives until the next horror occurs.

mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience. it isn't more complicated than that. it is opening to or receiving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it. sylvia boorstein

natural wines...

this particular post might offend a few people, if it does, sorry but it's a blog. i am not and do not pretend to be an oenophile or wine connoisseur just responding to likes and dislikes.

organic vin (wine) is all the rage in paris at the moment with many adherents who swear by its superior qualities. while i applaud, appreciate and purchase natural and/or organic products i'm giving a thumbs down on this trend. living in france, naturally i know a lot of wine drinkers. at this point have tried quite a few natural wines with mostly the same result; my stomach becomes very sensitive and upset afterwards.

i love reading historical novels, so often when drinking un verre of organic vin what comes to mind are the inns and taverns in the english countryside where travelers were offered glasses of watered down wine. the natural wines frequently seems 'thin' with no body, a little raw and slightly less refined than their traditional brethren and sometimes, two steps from vinegar. the expression which comes to mind, 'each to their own' certainly applies here.

bones...

this skull under glass was one of the displays at les puces yesterday. if one was to count all the skulls, skeletons and bones, human and nonhuman, being sold at all the paris flea markets on any particular day, i think the number would astound.

i was told from a very young age that my mother donated her body to medical science. i've often wondered what became of her skeleton. was it buried or cremated or is it hanging intact in a classroom. hopefully, it's not being offered for sale at some flea market.
