in paris it is the season for vide-greniers (attic cleaning) or neighborhood street sales and we've gone to a number of them in the past couples of weeks. people in various neighborhoods get together and sell unwanted items spread on blankets, tables or hung from racks, windows and/or cars. the vide-greniers have ranged up and down the social/economic scale and have provided insight into the lives, tastes and buying habits of the various quartiers.

yesterday we were in an area bordering the 6th/7th arrondissement where some of the goods certainly had different marks or labels than in most other vide-greniers we've visited lately. the people seem to have a different attitude too, sometimes of snobbery and 'i don't really need the money. just have no need for these things anymore'.  heard a number of the sellers refusing to barter and a couple of times making fun of people who didn't want to buy, for whatever the reason, the item. interestingly enough what was missing yesterday was the suspicious guarding of the merchandise and the vibe that comes from fear that some item or another might be stolen.

a lane at cimetiére de passy

Sunday, September 22, 2013

yesterday visited the small and very quiet passy cemetery. at one point i may have been the only visitor and the dried, falling leaves being pushed by the wind across the cobblestones sounded like feet scampering to and fro among the sepulchres.

ferris wheel...

paris has its share of ferris wheels and yesterday we saw yet another one at the fete neu-neu on the outskirts of the bois de boulogne. recently noticed la grande roue (ferris wheel) in the tuileries being dismantled and i thought it was being transported to the bois de boulogne fun fair. yesterday's ferris wheel was big but not as big as the one in the tuileries and the seats were entirely different. no, there's nothing very important about this post but we need diversions from so-called real life or we'll lose our minds.

treat life like a ferris wheel... you must get past the fear to enjoy the view. linda poindexter

globally people are praying for peace in the world and especially in syria. as we approach the 12th anniversary of 9/11 it is difficult not to look back on the days leading up to that heinous event, the actual attack on the towers and the lies and horrors that followed and continue to this day. i want my prayers to join those of my brothers and sisters around the world. realistically i understand that prayer is not enough. we have to repeatedly tell our respective governments in no uncertain terms that we are tired of war! we will no longer pay for or fight in these struggles for oil and natural resources. war is NOT the answer! we want real diplomacy.

reflected love...

Thursday, September 5, 2013

lately have been meeting some of my online 'friends' in the flesh. it's been an interesting and slightly bizarre experience to have the two-dimensional profile picture expand to a full sized three-dimensional person. The connections i have with most of these online people revolve around photography in general and the hipstamatic camera app in particular.

i have currently experienced the following responses to the encounters:

1. sometimes the 'meet space' event mirrors the online one, we really bond and a very real 'it's so good to see you again' sentiment is present. the meeting becomes the foundation of a true friendship.

2. the ambivalence felt for the online persona is mirrored in the 'real life' meeting.

3. you have only a passing acquaintance online and meet in 'real life' and connect.

4. on meeting, the enthusiasm and 'like' experienced online falls away and find myself looking askew at the person thinking, "hmm, okay." i walk away knowing the common interests aren't enough to bind us or be the basis of any real relationship.

i know all of these reactions are present when dealing with people not met in the virtual world. however it seems online interaction makes 'cutting to the chase' much quicker; perhaps people find it easier to talk to strangers.

i just had the fourth sort of interaction and frankly am very disappointed. it's ironic to sometimes know and share details of lives and feel a kind of closeness never having physically met. when a meet-up does occur the camaraderie evaporates and... well i won't 'unfriend' but i no longer care and somehow that saddens me. c'est comme ça que.
