harley...

i've decided paris is harley davidson country. there are so many of these big, beautiful, pristine bikes everywhere and not all ridden by men either. met some really nice, american-loving bikers yesterday. the bike shown is small compared to many i've seen!

brocante...

yesterday we visited a special easter monday brocante. on exiting the metro we encountered a woman, Gina, who also seemed headed to the event. grabbing my arm when we asked directions she said, "come with me." she told us she was 84 and had started going to brocantes, flea markets and vide greniers with her father when she was five. "all these years, i still go every week. it doesn't matter the weather, wind, rain, i go." when asked if she still bought things she gave a hardly laugh before saying, "no, not so much any more. i don't have any space."

we walked the few blocks to the marché, said our goodbyes and wished Gina a good day of looking.

la terreur...

am currently reading a book about the french revolution and la terreur (reign of terror). as i read, am aware i recognize names that have been immortalized not just in the annals of history but as street names and metro stops. yesterday walking around a neighborhood in the 13th arrondissement saw numerous streets dedicated to various french revolutionaries.

reading about la terreur which lasted from 5 september 1793 to 28 july 1794, brings to mind stalin's purges in the soviet union in the 20th century. more than once i have found myself glad that i wasn't alive and living in france at the end of the 18th century. one week you could be considered a friend of the revolution and the next, tumble from favor and be killed.

it is estimated that during this period around 500,000 people were imprisoned and approximatively 100,000 were executed or were the victims of massacres. 17,000 people were executed using the guillotine or the 'national razor'. according to wikipedia 2,639 people were guillotined in paris, including, as most know, the king and queen of france. another 20 to 30,000 were killed across france in summary executions.

terror is nothing else than justice, prompt, severe, inflexible. maximillien robespierre
