maya angelou...

4 april 1928 - 28 may 2014
I know why the caged bird sings, ah me, when his wing is bruised and his bosom sore, when he beats his bars and would be free; It is not a carol of joy or glee, but a prayer that he sends from his heart's deep core but a plea, that upward to Heaven he flings –i know why the caged bird sings.  maya angelou

FN...

the FN (front national) the far right party headed by marine le pen achieved a historic victory in the eu elections on sunday. the FN polled 25% of the votes in the european elections and became france's top party on the european stage. the parti socialist (PS), the ruling party, was predicted to receive between 13.9% and 16% of the vote while the centre-right UMP polled under 20% of the vote.

though the FN 'victory' was not unexpected the numbers were a little surprising and disappointing for many who are against the ideology of the FN. the french foreign minister laurent fabius said of the FN victory, "one winner and a lot of losers".

above is a poster calling on french voters to boycott the elections. it is estimated that 57% of french voters abstained from going to the polls. according to huffington post: over half a million French voters posted blank ballots on sunday. for the first time in an election in france blanck ballots were actually counted. although the official figure has not been given, it is estimated there were 540,000 "vote blancs". another 240,000 ballot papers were destroyed."

time...

last night we saw two hours of a 24 hour real time video installation about clocks and time. the artist, christian marclay, intercut scenes from 70 years worth of films using pieces containing clocks and/or watches. it's amazing how many films contain references to time with the characters asking, "what time is it?"

the research and editing for the installation must have been an amazing process, almost daunting! the editors used sound as the segway in and out of scenes. films shot 20, 30, even 50 years apart were seemingly effortlessly linked together.

seems we missed a special 24-hour screening of the piece. twenty-four hours watching one 'film' is a film addict's dream.
