peace...

everyday i pray for peace but as his holiness the dalai lama says, "peace does not come through prayer, we human beings must create peace." sometimes hard to believe that one small action might have a ripple effect but we have to keep believing and acting.

i am numbed by all the senseless and unconscionable violence occurring in the world. in particular i'm thinking of the shooting down of malaysia flight MH17 and the fighting taking place in israel and gaza. in general i'm thinking of the violence, national or personal, happening every minute of every day some place on our planet.

gris...

suppose i had begun to take all those blue, sunny days for granted. was going to write about the grey, cold, rainy weather we've been experiencing when i remembered that paris is where i first embraced grey skies. not only did i embrace but began to appreciate and love the various shades of paris gris. okay so it's grey, cold and feels more like october than july, who cares 'cause it's paris.

Finding Vivian Maier...

finally got to see the film, "Finding Vivian Maier". i didn't 'love' it as all my friends said i would or even as i secretly hoped i might. in fact, i didn't like the film and am experiencing morning-after viewing sadness. while watching i found myself shifting into 'film editor mode', which is never a good thing.

happy to see three influential photographic icons, mary ellen mark, joel meyerowitz and howard greenberg speak about the quality and importance of vivan maier's work. perhaps their opinions will silence the john maloof and vivian maier's critics and hecklers. so many seem to need an 'expert' pronouncement before they will accept the obvious.

"Finding Vivian Maier" was tedious and WAY too long. in my opinion, the handling of the material was heavy-handed, in that it kept pounding the notion that there was something wrong with maier. wrong because she was merely a nanny, she didn't just want to be a photographer, few knew she took photos and brilliant ones at that, she didn't seem to want to print or exhibit her work, she was different, she 'obviously' had issues, hoarder, sexual issues. look how she dressed, look at her subject matter, blah, blah, blah.

rose lichter-marck's opinion piece in "the new yorker" says it best:

"Finding Vivian Maier" shows that stories of difficult women can be unflattering even when they are told in praise. The unconventional choices of women are explained in the language of mental illness, trauma, or sexual repression, as symptoms of pathology rather than as an active response to structural challenges or mere preference. Biographers often treat iconoclastic women like Yoko Ono, Marie Curie, Emily Dickinson, and Vivian Maier as problems that need solving. *

my objections to the film in no way alter my respect for john maloof and his crusade to bring vivian maier's gigantic body of work to the public's attention. he has succeeded in introducing and installing this fantastic photographer in the photographic lexicon.

the school of the art institute of chicago recently announced the endowment of a permanent vivian maier scholarship fund. john maloof and charles siskel of raven pictures and art gallerist howard greenberg are donating a generous percentage from the sale of vivian maier's photograpy and the film to fund the endowment. this scholarship will provide financial assistance to needy young photographer. kudos to them!!

may vivian maier's missions be accomplished

mindfulness...

mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience. it isn't more complicated than that. it is opening to or receiving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it. sylvia boorstein
