a glance...

recently while having a café in the nepresso store, i noticed the almost hopperesque tableau of shadows, light and interactions happening at the entrance.

happened to notice this vitrine while walking on the champs elysees last week. at first glance, i merely saw a gold bear standing on it's head. when i looked closer, behind the top reflection, a funnel and wine bottle could be seen sticking out of bear's posterior. the imagined liquid would exit through the tap on the front of the bear.

seen in the standing on head position, if not looked at closely, the piece is 'artsy'. change the orientation of the image and well... it's vulgar!

since this display is in a major tourist area, it makes me think, at best the window dressers were being provocative and at worse, providing a  tongue-in-cheek insult to the strolling star-struck visitors who probably, barely glanced a second time at the 'art' piece.

on sunday the world mobilized to march for climate change. it's estimated that 5,000 people were in attendance in paris, 300,000 in nyc and in total, half a million people participated world wide. while it's great that citizens came out in support of saving the planet, half a million out of a total world population of 7 billion people is a paltry amount; barely a drop in the proverbial bucket. the earth's citizenry had better wake up before it's too late.

yesterday's storm...

Saturday, September 20, 2014

went to a huge vernissage, opening, last night at marché dauphine. the event was replete with many people in costume including these armed star wars characters. darth vader, in full regalia, was also in attendance. i happened to be present as he whipped his cape around his body and strutted from an elevator to strobing lights and flashing cameras / phones.

most of the costumed people stayed in character all evening. it was a little disconcerting to see these armed, masked, futuristic warriors marching marching around the area. heard that a couple of times they were seen pushing their way through the crowds as if they were really soldiers.

three older, male members of perhaps a gaul tribe even though one looked vaguely scottish in his plaid kilt and antlered, deer head helmet, roamed around laughingly menacing the monied hordes. there was lots of champagne, finger foods, patisseries and people laughing, smiling and posing.

the scots went to the polls yesterday to decide whether or not to become an independent country. this independence would entail leaving the united kingdom. 2,001,926 people voted no and 1, 617,989 people voted yes. scotland remains a part of the uk.

of course, i understand the store's name. it's a store for vegetarians who object to wearing shoes constructed of animal product. in theory, however, the name prompts lots of slightly absurd images.

(internet photo: the new yorker)
on this day, sept 11, 2001, our world as we knew it, was forever changed. for me, the attacks against the world trade center created a wound that has slowly healed, leaving a tremendous scar and a small, lingering sadness nestled in my heart. i remember.
