halloween...

this afternoon one of the local elementary schools staged a halloween parade. it was like a manifestation (demonstration) with chanting, costumed children and a police escort. was surprised the chant wasn't, "what do we want?? candy!! when do we want it?? NOW!!"

paris catacombs...

the other day visited the paris catacombs where the bones of 6 million people have been deposited. found the repository of stacked femurs and skulls slightly overwhelming to comprehend and process. there were so many bones! the tour didn't include a viewing of all the ossuaries because that would have taken more than the allotted two hours.

after encountering the first two or three 'bone' displays i noticed that most people, including me, became slightly desensitized to the fact that we were viewing mortal remains. instead they became merely objects, props in some morbid tableau. that distance seemed to induce a sense of joviality into the environment. perhaps it was a defense mechanism.

one american man went too far, in my opinion, by lifting a femur and waving it around. for me, that gesture brought the fact that it was a human bone back in focus. it wasn't that the bone was sacred but it deserved to be treated with a minimal amount of respect, which meant not touching it.

perhaps if all the bones were placed behind plaques with original cemetery and deposit information rather than arranged in 'artful' displaces, more decorum would be shown or automatically maintained. the halloween funhouse atmosphere was slightly bizarre.

the catacombs are one of paris' top ten tourist attractions, bringing in needed revenue for the city. need i say more?! i wouldn't discourage anyone from visiting. however, i would not encourage anyone either.

if i can find a catacombs tour which did not include the ossuaries i would eagerly buy a ticket. i enjoyed walking the tidy corridors with street names and cryptic numbers carved into the stones. i imagined a kind of underground labyrinth and longed to hold a map while i walked the route.
