fish in the sky... really like discovering new neon signs.

yesterday attended a friend's funeral and learned a number of things; death can cut not only the tangible link between the living and the dead, it can also provide the occasion for severing ties with the living. when mortality is shining a bright beam it becomes easier to accept what one does and does not want in one's life.

sometimes relationships can be like those old-fashioned sandwich boards men used to wear advertising a business or product. we flip the numbers to count the passing years of 'knowing' each other, when in fact, the trust, acceptance and other elements that comprise a 'true' friendship were fainter than we wanted to acknowledge.

we were counting the quantity of years rather than the quality of the association. in a flash of insight it is finally understood that the entire situation has become untenable. it is sad and sometimes difficult to accept that there is almost nothing to salvage. i suppose the point is to walk away, not with rancor or anger but to head towards the light without looking back.

there is no real ending. it's just the place where you stop the story.  frank herbert

the twins...

took this photo at one of the fashion shows then two days later saw these twins at a textile exhibit. i walked up to them, this photo visible on my camera roll, asking, "is this you?". it was, we had a quick, animated chat and later i emailed the photo to them.

Helene and Simone were at fashion week to promote their accessories line. wishing them all the best.

paulette stevens...

last night learned via social media that a longtime friend had suffered a brain aneurysm and died instantly while attending church. i looked at one of her last posts which was dated february 28th where she spoke of juicing and enjoying the results. she died the following day.

the friend was a minister and apparently had just announced at sunday services that she was to be pastor for two local churches. based on many of her posts she was a true believer/follower of jesus so perhaps for many it is comforting to know she died in a place which held such significance for her. this is a poignant reminder to live in the present because the next moment is not promised.

fashion week...

because of the generosity of a friend, for the past couple of days i have been attending various runway shows at paris fashion week. it's been quite an interesting experience. have seen shows by known and lesser known designers. some of the clothing has been blah and "who would wear that!' or "good lord! look at all this synthetic fabric!" and one was "wow, i really like this!! wonder where i can purchase these clothes?"

perhaps one of the best aspects of this experience has been seeing venues i know and like, such as the le palais de tokyo and le grand palais, in a different perspective. for instance, i didn't know that the palais de tokyo had a 'boite de nuite', i.e., night club, deep in its bowels. one descends into the lower depths of the museum via graffiti covered walls and stairs. have also visited a couple of places i wouldn't know about if it weren't for fashion week.

i have to bow in reverence to fashion photographers. i took lots of pictures but trying to get a 'good' one was exceptionally difficult so i decided to concentrate on capturing the movement.

merci, elise g s for providing this fabulous opportunity.

LLAP    live long and prosper
(photo: getty image)
when i was 13 years old mr. spock, the star trek character played by leonard nimoy, was a hero and role model. i perfected mr. spock's signature vulcan salute on both my left and right hands; normally we only saw the one handed salute. while googling for this post i saw the two handed greeting for the first time.

it was interesting to learn that mr. nimoy, who was raised as an orthodox jew, modeled the salute on a ritual performed by the "kohanim", descendants of the israelite priesthood. the congregation was not supposed to look as the ritual was being performed but a young nimoy fascinated by the "magical, mystical" chanting peeked, memorizing the secret hand gestures.

the "V" is shaped for the hebrew letter "shin", the first letter in shaddai, which is one of the names of g_d. it is also the first letter in shekhinah. nimoy defined shekhinah as "the feminine aspect of g_d who was created to live among humans". i was pleasantly surprised to discover that the salute, "live long and prosper" which i have always felt was a blessing, is in fact, just that.

mr nimoy sent his final tweet on monday, february 23, 2015. "A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP"
