halloween...

joyeux halloween?? many french complain about the 'americanization' and/or loss of their culture yet they invite various aspects of the 'despised' culture into their lives.

chided...

was looking through the draft folder and came across this post dated 26 november 2012. after rereading, decided to publish because not long ago i experienced the same attitude.

recently i was chided for an entry i published regarding the 17 october 1961 incident. the 'event' involved the beating and killing of large numbers of pro-algerian independence demonstrators by the french police. my friend objected to the number of people i listed as killed, 'it is estimated that more than 200 people were massacred by the police that night'. i try to be as accurate as possible when writing about everything, especially historical events. always checking more than one source and on occasion i have posted a link for continued reading.

if someone is reading a post and feels the need to be further informed about a certain situation or incident i would encourage them to research and learn as much as possible. if a reader objects to my posts, by all means leave a civil comment and i will address his/her concerns but this is a personal blog and i do not feel the need, nor will i as a rule, site footnotes or sources.

am aware that i am an outsider, i.e., american, writing about a 'french' historical event but i feel i have a right as a citizen of the world to comment. in france, it has come to my attention that american opinions are often dismissed or overruled, even when talking about u.s. history and/or current u.s. events.

it was explained to me not long ago, "we french have a sense of superiority when it comes to most people, but especially the americans and british". no reason was given for this elitism but i have my suspicions. this chauvinism will continue and there is probably not a lot i could do to change it but i'm certainly not going to accept this behavior without comment.

dreams...

hold fast to dreams
for if dreams die
life is a broken-winged bird
that cannot fly.
hold fast to dreams
for when dreams go
life is a barren field
frozen with snow.

illusive...

conversation overheard on the metro between an older, 70s?, white, english speaking couple.
man with blue beret perched on his head: i haven't seen any moslems yet. where are they? have you seen any?!
woman with a matching red beret perched on her head: i think i saw one. moslem was their word, not mine!

a young, french woman and i exchanged horrified looks. they continued looking around the train, searching for those illusive moslems.

me to the couple: you should be careful because lots of people here speak english.

the woman, looking insulted leaned in to tell her puzzled husband what i had said. the young woman got up to leave the train, nodded her head at me and flashed a huge smile.

seriously, what's WTF is wrong with people??!
