around 12h30 this morning was watching television, heard a pop then out of the corner of my eye saw a large, orange ball of light. rushed to the window to see that the neighborhood tent man's tent was on fire. thankfully, don't believe the occupant was inside.

when the flames were quite high saw a worker from a neighboring restaurant running with towards the fire with his in-house fire extinguisher. some bystanders dissuaded him from using it; by that time it was totally useless anyway. it seemed to take the pompiers quite a long time to arrive. when they did arrive, the flames had crawled up the building and the intensity of the heat was obvious. the fire was doused and the pitiful remains of the man's belongings were swept aside.

today saw a woman making aligot in a pot on the pavement. aligot resembles fondue and consists, in this instance, of melted tomme d'auvergne cheese, butter, crushed garlic and mash potatoes blended together. the dish is ready when it achieves an elastic consistency. it was actually quite tasty.

jealousy vs envy...

i have always, since i was very young, believed one should be happy for other people's good fortune. i learned very early that jealousy and envy were mostly useless emotions that harmed the bearer more than anyone else. for me, they were shameful feelings to even have. this is not to say that i have never felt twinges of jealousy or envy but i didn't / don't allow these sentiments to linger and i try to examine why they have entered my consciousness.

am amazed at how often and/or casually people say or write, "i'm so jealous/envious or i was so jealous/envious'. in fact, i find it difficult to believe that someone would admit, aloud and with laughter that they  are experiencing these emotions at all. most of the time, based on the context they really mean they are envious but jealous must seem a more innocuous word and/or emotion. while many seem to use envy and jealous synonymously they actually are not. just googled jealousy vs envy

according to wikipedia: jealousy is an emotion and typically refers to the negative thoughts and feelings on insecurity, fear and anxiety over an anticipated loss of something that the person values, particularly in reference to a human connection. jealousy often consists of a combination of presenting emotions such as anger, resentment, inadequacy, helplessness and disgust. in the original broad meaning, jealousy is distinct from envy, though the two terms have popularly become synonymous in the english language, with both now taking on the narrower definition originally used for envy alone.

mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience. it isn't more complicated than that. it is opening to or receiving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it. sylvia boorstein

Sherie K...

lately have been acutely aware of the truth of the expression, "here today, gone tomorrow". Sherie, a friend on a social network website, posted that she was having trouble breathing and was admitted to the hospital. the next day she posted a picture of her hand complete with an iv saying "no heart attack or stroke and the doctors were looking for the issue". the following day, Sherie's sister-in-law posted on Sherie's page that she, Sherie, had stopped breathing and the family had made the decision to take her off life support. six hours later Sherie died. just like that, she was gone.
