Hillary...

watched the first presidential debate. donald trump is a total embarrassment, a charlatan, liar, bully and con man. he is unfit and unprepared in every way to hold the highest office in the united states. it is unbelievable that the republican party nominated him to be their standard bearer.

church...

yesterday came across this rather odd looking church in viroflay rive gauche. to me it looks like a helmet of some cartoon alien space creature. my partner thinks it looks the hull of a boat. sadly, the doors were locked so i couldn't catch a glimpse of the interior.

reality...

according to albert einstein, "reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one." the reality of what could happen to the united states and the world if the megalomanic representing the republican party is elected president is the stuff of nightmares.

the christian evangelicals are 'laying' hands on donald trump to give him 'god's protection' from satan. the irony of this should not be lost on anyone. religious leaders are invoking the protection of their god for a man who promotes hate, cruelty and discord, who has made his reputation by being mean, greedy and nasty! a man who seemingly lies whenever he opens his mouth. why would they ask 'god' to protect someone who appears to embody everything their bible says a person shouldn't be? don't know what god they're worshiping but sounds a bit dubious to me.

la shoah...

yesterday made my way to the Mèmorial de la Shoah. it was a very sobering and sometimes physically painful experience. still hard to wrap my mind around the systematic brutality, death machines, number of victims and the silence and/or active complicity of the rest of the world in those years. did learn new details, for instance there were quite a few jewish women in the resistance and the french government in exile compiled a booklet of 41(!!) pages listing in alphabetic order the names, location and purposes of the various labor and death camps. hard to look at the details of 70 years ago and not think of what is happening in the world NOW.
may the memories of the victims of the Shoah be blessed.

9/11, we remember...

(internet photo)
today is the 15th anniversary of the attacks on the world trade center in nyc. i have heard people say, "you should let go, move on and forget about it". as long as i have the ability to remember that day, the days leading up to and following that horrific moment, i will mark september 11, 2001 and say a prayer for the victims; those who died and those who lived.

this is what i posted on 9/11, 2010:

on that day (september 11th, 2001) as i stood crying on 7th avenue south (20 blocks from the site) and wondered at "the sparkly things falling from the sky", i started to scream, "it's collapsing, it's collapsing". i watched as the south tower turned to a thick whitish, grey cloud and ceased to be. i knew without a doubt that i was standing on the page turn of history; needed to jump or be crushed. was aware that our world had instantly changed and as we have witnessed, nothing has been the same. i weep for the loss of our innocence (or was it ignorance).

one of my memories of sept 11th is silence; don't remember sirens or any type of noise just a complete absence of sound. the air felt as if it had been sucked out of the city and the only thing that existed were the burning, then missing towers and a hush. a few years ago i looked at the video my partner shot from the 17th floor of our greenwich village building and was overwhelmed by the clanging and roar of the many emergency vehicles as they raced the 30 blocks to the scene; i had heard none of it!

it is nine years since that horrific morning and still when i see manhattan from a distance i catch myself scanning the horizon for them. i miss the buildings which were alternately known as the world trade center or the twin towers. for me, they served as the gatekeepers to my emerald city, my oz, new york city. i loved those two buildings because, for me, they exemplified new york, new york. alas, they reside everywhere but in this reality.

because of the changing skyline, find that it takes a moment to locate where the towers used to be. know that i have to "let them go", accept and embrace the new buildings and different landscape. yet it is hard. my heart knots when i catch a glimpse of them in a pre-9/11 film or some random photograph.

may the missions be accomplished of all those who died on that day, 9.11.2001.

frail...

this u.s. presidential election season has been exceptionally offensive because it has revealed in all its ugliness the unrestrained misogyny and racism held by the media in general and american society in particular. honest, national dialogues about race, class and gender are long overdue but i doubt that americans can have an honest, open conversation. there's too much blaming, misinformation and too many closed minds for people to take a sincere look at the state of america. the nursery rhyme about humpty dumpty comes to mind. humpty dumpty being a stand-in for the frail mythology that is the united states.

humpty dumpty sat on a wall. humpty dumpty had a great fall and all the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put humpty dumpty together again.

a very LARGE flock of pigeons reside on the roof of the brancusi studio next to beaubourg. when a cluster of the birds decide to take flight, it can be quite impressive and a little startling.
